Feng Shan Big cave

Introduction Start Date 20th of May 2009.

Following hearing about and visiting feng shan last year me and Adong had been hoping to go back and make some new routs ever since. Echo (founder of Karstclimber), Adong and me made some contacts with Mr Wei the local tourism minister and we organised a sponsored climbing trip making new sport climbs. We also had no set plan and no set return date! A real adventure. There were 4 of us; me, Adong, Paul and xiao yu. We all live in Yangshuo阳朔. I mange Karstclimber, Paul is the owner of Spider man climbing; Adong is an enthusiastic free climber who works free lance and climbs better than any of us. Xiao yu is Paul’s girl friend came as our photographer. But she left after a few days and went back to Yangshou.

Days 1 to 5

Discovering Feng Shan

20th We met at 6:00 AM and carried our 3 bags each to the bus station in the early morning rain of Yangshuo’s summer time. Our bus journey was Yangshuo to Guilin, Guilin to He che, He che to Feng Shan. We arrived at about 7:00 and met Mr Wei for dinner. We did not have many bolts so we decided to spend a few days looking around and playing before we got down to making routs.

21st We looked around Chuan Long yan (The dragon Cave) and in the afternoon we went to San men hai 三门海 and walk through the 3 big arches and went swimming. When we got back to feng shan we had dinner in a big fancy hotel with some officials. In the evening me and Adong when to see what else there was to do here. We found a local theatre and after peeping over a wall at the back we found a roller disco. No one was there except to girls so we asked them to teach us to skate. Feng Shan is very remount and not many tourists go there. They were very surprised to see us and even more that we were walking around and playing and talking with local people.

22nd The big wall descent day.
Paul had had his eye on making a multi pitch rout on the big cliff above the town following a crack up about 6 pitches. We got up at about 8:00 am and sorted all our things, then hiked up through high fields of maze and fruit trees fighting of the mosquitoes. Then we started to climb up through the jungle to get to the start of the abseil. We were only 10m from the place we wanted to get when I pulled off a rock and nearly fell off the mountain! as we were not far from the edge and the rock had suddenly become unstable. We all roped up and Paul led a short pitch to the top and belayed off a tree. I climbed up next and Adong followed but fell off as a rock broke. He cut his knee and shin and looked a bit shaken up. Paul full of enthusiasm started to rig the abseil off a tree right over the edge of the cliff. His plan was for us all to abseil down and bolt as we go. I decided to not go so if they had some problem I could get more equipment and help.
I climbed back down through the jungle and all the way back down into the town. I was afraid for them and if they knocked off any rocks it might land on someone as we were so close to the town.
They descended 3 pitches down the cliff. I eat Ice cream and watch as the afternoon drags on and they were working in the sun with out any water. They did not bolt the last anchor and abseiled to the ground by tying to ropes together and abseiling on a single rope to get all the way down.

23rd. The rope rescue day.
We had about 140m of rope up on the cliff now that needed to come down. I said I would go and get it. It was hard as the cliff was so overhung. I climb the rope to just past the knot and then got Adong and Paul to swing me into the cliff. It was about a 30m swing from fully out too fully into the cliff. I had picked a hold on the cliff I could hold on to when I was swung into it. I put as sky hock into one of the holds but It was not good. I played with putting some big cams in but I could not get anything to fit. I placed an opposing sky hock and carefully slackened off my jumars so the rope stretch would not lift me off the placements. I haled up the hall bag with the drill and bolts about 60m. I had unwittingly left some other equipment in it. All together it was very heavy. It took about 15 min for me to pull this up bit by bit! I drilled the first bolt and clipped to it feely such a relief that I now could not swing back out into the emptiness of the feng shan sky. I drill the second one and pulled the rope up from the ground and tide it to the anchor. Then I tightened up my jumars and lowered my self out into space again. I then climbed the remaining 60m’s to the tope anchor. I tied to it and pulled the rope through so I could abseil down to the new anchor I had made before. It was a full 60m down and the rope was so stiff in my ATC guide. I put 4 extra carabineers in as heat sinks and to make it run more smoothly. At last I reach the same height as the new anchor. l pulled my self into it with a jumar. I threaded the anchor and started to pull the rope through the top one with growing excitement and worry for things to keep on working properly. It all did and 10 min later I was on the ground and the hardest 4 hours of my time in feng shan were over! We took our stuff back to the hotel and when for lunch, after we went swimming in yuan yang quan鸳鸯泉, a natural spring where the water is so blue it looks like it was made in Photoshop. There were some children playing there and they were as everyone here very surprised to see us.

24th. Rest day!
We had a Rest day as I had a bad stomach. I think I had eaten too much water melon! In the afternoon we went swimming again in yuan yang quan.

25th. The completion of the first new rout.
We got up early as Xiao yu was leaving that morning. After she got on the bus we sorted our things and took them to the far side of the dragon cave where we looked around for an easy but interesting rout. It was my tern to try and I wanted to bolt and send a rout that day. I found a big over hanging cave climb that I could build by leaving old rope tide through threads in the rock and a few bolts. I climbed up on trad and took a long time but I got there in the end. I climbed up and down several times changing things then I came down and pulled the rope and sent it first go; very happy. The Name is龍牙 (The Dragons Teeth), F5+ (5.10b).
Mr Wei came to see how we were getting on well I was climbing. We told him we could not do to much as we only had a few bolts. He said he could help us with that and would pay for some bolts for feng shan.

Days 6 to 10

Making routes

26th. Back in the dragon cave making routs.
It was Paul’s tern again today, after looking around we started on a big over hang. He drilled 3 bolts into the rout and was quite tired. I took over and did 3 then Paul did a bit more. We finished the day without finishing the rout but very tired.

27th. Paul and Adong finished bolting the rout. We did not send it though; after we listened to some people singing on the street and went roller scatting.

28th. A slow day
Adong fell in the river after bolting his root on the biggest bit of the roof at the Dragon cave. I brushed the mud off Paul’s rout but broke the new brush, Paul did not send the rout he now has a bad back so he can not do much and we finished early.

29th. The small sealing!
We got up late and Adong put the last bolts on the roof. We had a few goes at climbing it but its hard!

30th. Paul sent his rout 11,b Duan wu端午then me and Adong flashed it and then we tried Adong’s but dud not even get half way!

Days 11 to 15

Working well

31st. The magic monkey buttress day.
Paul stayed in feng shan waiting for bolts to arrive. Me and Adong went looking for Trad climbing but did not find any. We made a sport rout which is about 5.12c instead on a new crag we called it The Magic Monkey Buttress. It has such nicely formed rock but must of it to my eyes is un-climb-able.

June 2009
01st. A strange day
Not much to report we are waiting for Hangers. Yesterday the bolts turned up but no hangers yet. Also we set up a meeting with Mr Wei to sort out the funding of these things.

02nd. Not a bad start but it was raining; the French Caver Jean met us and gave us a lift to the Dragon Cave. On the way we picked up the hangers for the new bolts so we were now well equipped for making many routs. It was the best and closest indoor climbing! Adong finished a rout in 3 hours but did not even try and send it. We now had plenty of Hangers and bolts. But Mr Wei still had not paid us.
In the evening me and Adong went back to the dragon cave and climbed a toothier to the sealing and built the anchor for the start of a multi pitch roof climb! It was a good adventure and felt really crazy as we had thrown a rope over a big stalactite and climb the rope and then the rock to get there!

03rd. A good day
We made 3 routs; one 5.7, one 5.12a? and one 5.12d in the dragon Cave. The weather is getting better and Paul is going home tomorrow.

04th. Me and Adong went back to Magic Monkey Buttress and made 3 more routs. One 5.10,d one 5.11.a and one 5.12d. We also started a 5.11d. It was hot and hard work and we finished the day very tired!

Days 16 to 20

The end of the expedition

05th. Time for a new place
With a 7.00am start we went to: san men hai. It’s a river that comes out of the mountain with 3 big arches over the top of it and the bluest water you have ever seen! Adong had a bad stomach so I lead a corner crack which was a bit vegetated. I climbed it on trad and onsite. It was about 5.8 and had a really nice belay in the shade. When I started on the second pitch I found 3 wooden pegs made of old tree branches. They had been there for a bit. I was not the first person to have climbed this, indeed it had been sent before but by locals. I could not imagine the purpose of climbing such a rout; maybe there was a bee hive there before. With that in mined I really hoped that now there was not any bees! From the tope of this second pitch we found some more old scaffolding made of tree branches. This was a natural end for this rout and we abseiled off.
After Adong climbed leading with a drill a 5.10b? It was one of the most balls out limestone assents I have ever seen. He climbed leading with the drill and bolting hanging with one hand! He said before he climbed with us and all our equipment he always made routs like this! After that we were very tired and hungry so we went back down to the village and swam and eat. It has to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

6th. Me and Adong finished work on the Magic Monkey Buttress and bolted the top pitch on the roof of the dragon cave. It was dirty and scary and lots of people came to watch. It took me a very long time to do it as it was so confusing. I could not see which way to go even though I had it all worked out on the ground!

7th. The big sealing
All day to finish and bolt the bottom pitch and send the top one on the crazy sealing climb in the dragon cave. Adong again had the hardest job of bolting on repel the first pitch of the sealing climb with only a few quick draws as the rest were all in the top pitch! We were both very tired but happy to be finished and have all the routs we had started equipped and ready for use.

08th. Play day
Last day in Feng Shan we met up with Jean and to girls from Naning and when to San Men Hai swimming, playing and making lots of Chinese style photographs. It was a nice holiday after our hard days bolting.

09th. Escaping Feng Shan
We got the money from Mr Wei but it was to late for me to get back to Yangshuo so I stayed another day in feng shan and when roller scatting. Adong took the bus to naning as his family live there.
